I Don't See a Register Link!

  • In order to register you must be logged into your TCUL account.  The login is located at the top of the leftside task bar.  If you don't have a TCUL account you can create one there as well.  Once logged in, each league page will include a Register button at the top.

General Information

Below are some general facts about Year #2 of Masters League in TCUL, some of which will be explained in detail further down on this page. Keep in mind that the goal of Masters League is to provide an opportunity for older players to continue playing the game against players of similar skill and age. Spirit Of The Game is expressly encouraged, along with post-game cheers, and compassion for fellow players:

  • Eligibility:
    • Women 30+ by 12/31/2018
    • Men 33+ by 12/31/2018
  • Co-ed
  • Rosters will be 10 men / 7 women
  • Maximum of 12 teams
  • Season runs for 10 weeks from May 14 to July 30 - no games on Memorial Day or during the 4th of July week
  • Games begin at 6:15pm
  • Games will be played on a Monday nights
  • Multiple Locations:  St. Paul Academy, St. Clair Park (Plaid fields), and Monroe Memorial Park (alternate Plaid field)
  • Cost = $65 (includes fields, t-shirt, and other wonderful things such as insurance, Paypal fees, cones, ice packs, etc.)
  • Most importantly, you do not need to be in top shape to play Masters League. See the section titled "Competitive vs Fun League" for more information

Registration

Similar to the Tue/Thur leagues, we will employ the lottery system for men that begins on March 15th*. Open registration begins on March 20th at 9am - the same time as all summer leagues. Players may select a carpool partner but it does not guarantee you a spot in the league - the same as all of the other leagues. If you would like to captain, please indicate so during the registration process. Volunteering to captain does not guarantee a spot in the lottery either. If the website says that registration is OPEN but you don't see the "Register" button on this page, check your account profile to make sure your correct birth year is displayed. Players not recognized as being 30+ years old will not see the "Register" button.

Refunds

Every effort will be made to refund registration fees if a player realizes that they can no longer play. However, once the draft occurs (typically 2-3 weeks before play begins) refunds will not be issued.

Schedule / Timing

Masters League will run for ten weeks from mid-May to late July. Fields will be available at 6pm with all games beginning at 6:15pm. We need to be off the fields by 8:30pm so there will be a hard cap at 8:20pm. Once the current scoring attempt is completed, the game ends unless the score is tied. If tied, play continues until one additional goal is scored (universe point). There will be no game during the Fourth of July week. Playoffs occur during the last two weeks with the top four teams playing one another, the middle four teams playing one another, and the bottom four playing one another. Each team will play most of the other teams at least once.

Fields

Games will be played at three locations.

1) St. Paul Academy:  Located at 1712 Randolph Avenue. Games will be played on the upper field, situated on the SE corner of the campus at the intersection of Davern Street and Hartford Avenue. There are big parking lots on the north side of the campus as well as street parking available closer to the fields. Our permit restricts us to parking in the lot and only on the school sides of Davern Street and Hartford Avenue. If players disregard this, neighbors will complain and we will lose the fields. Below are additional stipulations of our field contract with SPA. Please follow these or risk expulsion from Masters League:

  • No dogs allowed on school grounds
  • No alcohol, tobacco, or drugs (this is a school)
  • Keep the fields clean after your games. Follow the campsite rule used for dating and camping: leave the premises better than you found them
  • Do not linger at the fields after the permit time and keep the noise level down, for the quiet enjoyment of SPA's neighbors

2) St. Clair Park / West 7th Community Center:  Located at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue & Oneida St. Two games will be played on these fields, unfortunately having to utilize some of the baseball diamonds. There is a playground next to the field, but it is shielded from view by trees. Field 1 is the eastern field located closest to the parking lot. Field 2 is the western field located farthest from the parking lot.

3) Monroe Memorial Park:  Located at the intersection of W. Jefferson Avenue & Victoria Street S. It's a fenced-in field that can hold only one game. However, there is a jungle gym and basketball court located within the fences and right up to the field, so this will be a good location for families with children.

Competitive vs Fun League - Can't It Be Both?

No league is perfect. Masters League was created in order to provide an opportunity for older players to still compete without playing against those in their late-teens to early 30s. In it's first year of existence, Masters League fielded exactly 50 players in their 40s, 19 players in their 50s, and one who was 60+. That said, the other 60% of the league was in their 30s. There was competitve play out there but also the ability to match up against players of any age/skill. As a TCUL league, expect games to be competitive yet fun at an older, slower pace. Players just entering masters age should understand that players and teams aren't able to play as hard/competitive as they used to do. Players at the far end of the masters spectrum should understand that there are still fast players out there who want to play hard and win games. Younger players need to lower their expectations. Older players need to dig deep and play to the best of their abilities. If everybody understands the capabilities and desires of their teammates, this can be a very enjoyable league!

Rosters

Normal summer league rosters contain nine men and six women (9M/6F). Knowing that masters league is comprised of more parents and players with diminishing stamina, we added one of each gender to the rosters (10M/7F).

Rules

All USAU 11th Edition rules apply to Masters League (including the ability to play zone defense all season) with the following exception:

  • Players are able to call a brief equipment timeout which does not count as a team timeout
  • Children can play some points with a parent, subject to a pre-game captains agreement
  • Players self-identify their birth year via the TCUL website, therefore we generally follow the honor system for age verification. If a player or substitute player's age is questioned, one of the captains can ask a Masters Board member to verify age before or immediately after a game. In such a case, yes, we will card you. For 2018, your birth year must be 1985 for men or 1988 for women
  • Substitute players are allowed regardless of a team being savage or not. Captains should get a sense of how many points their players are capable or willing to play, and find suitable subs accordingly. The goal should be to maximize playing time for those that paid and want to play. Subs must meet all of the masters requirements and should not be a high caliber player. Subs are meant to supplement a team struggling with numbers, not to enhance a team's chances of winning. All subs should be announced to the opposing captain(s) before the game, preferably by email or text but in person if necessary.
  • The receiving team will determine if the current point will be played with 4 men and 3 women or 4 women and 3 men. The pulling team must match the gender ratio of the receiving team (the "Offense Decides Rule"). If the pulling team has 4 women or less available to play, they do not need to match
  • On Field 1 at SPA, if a disc hits the tree that hangs over the field it remains in play. If a disc is caught after touching the tree, it remains in play. If the disc subsequently hits the ground, it is a turnover.

Playoffs

The league will employ a bracket playoff system, the same as the other summer leagues.

Weather Policy

Who doesn't love a good thunderstorm or a fun mud game? Well, old people and neither does SPA. We will follow the motto of "If you can see it (lightning) flee it; if you can hear it (thunder), clear it." The best place to avoid getting struck by lightning is in a bar. Please head to one. SPA will notify the league by 2pm if the fields are too wet/muddy for games to be played. We will get out a notice on the TCUL website and Facebook pages to announce all cancelations.

Child Care

The league made many attempts to find a good solution for parents with kids. Due to insurance and liability issues, we are not able to provide child care. Our next goal was to find kid-friendly fields. We had several optimal fields with playgrounds but none were available. The SPA school does have a small playground area containing a climbing rock, a swing set, and a basketball hoop. The lower fields also have ample play space (if not used by other leagues) and are surrounded by fencing to keep children from running into the streets. If you bring your children to games, please make sure that they stay within sight of your team and/or make at least one player/parent on each team available to keep an eye on them throughout the game. Bringing supplies for group games (soccer ball, Frisbee, etc.) could be a good solution.

Lost & Found

Please give any abandoned items to a Board member (see below) and conversely, email the league with any Lost & Found inquiries. All Lost & Found items will be displayed next to the shotput fence in the NW corner of the ultimate fields.

The After Bar

The official Master's league bar is Tiffany Sports Lounge, located at 2051 Ford Pkwy, St Paul, MN 55116.  Please wait until at the bar to enjoy adult beverages and the like. School/park grounds are never a place to imbibe.

The Board

Masters League came together with a lot of hard work from Geoff Daniel, Carole Norris, Andrew Barry, and Andy Kahn in addition to other TCUL board members. Feel free to congratulate us, berate us, or offer kind suggestions for league improvement. We can also take lost & found items if they are brought to our attention, or verify ages upon request.

 

 

Lottery / Registration Information From the TCUL email sent to Past Players on February 25th:

Summer ultimate is just around the corner! And with that comes the process of registering for summer league to get your flying plastic fix for the summer. This year TCUL will have 4 different league offerings: 

  • Co-ed league on Tuesdays
  • Co-ed advanced league on Thursdays
  • Co-ed master's league on Mondays
  • Men's league on Thursdays

Since we are limited on space for men in each of our 3 co-ed leagues, we are again having a lottery for male registrants into these leagues. We are making a few modifications to how registration and the lottery works this year in order to maximize the number of men who get to participate in at least one league.

The lottery sign-up for co-ed leagues will occur from March 15 to March 18 (please note, your lottery odds do not change based on the day you complete this form, thus signing up on the 15th has equal odds to signing up on the 18th).  This lottery sign-up period is only for MEN who wish to participate in one (or more) of the co-ed leagues. This is a different process than in years past. We are hosting a lottery sign-up for our co-ed leagues for male participants prior to open league registration to let our male participants understand which co-ed leagues they have made it into before open league registration. This will help out league organizers and league participants in a number of ways:

  • Males who want to participate in co-ed leagues will know which league(s) they made it into before league registration opens for both genders, so there is no question about whether or not a male is in the same league as a female carpool.  (Please note, initial league sizes are based on an estimation from last year's participant numbers; leagues may expand or contract based upon actual registrants this year)
  • Organizers will know if there is additional space for males in any of the co-ed leagues that can be opened for league registration after the lottery.
  • Male participants don't have to pay twice (with anticipated refund) when deciding on whether to overflow into men's league if they don't make it into Tuesday or Thursday's co-ed leagues through the lottery process--they can simply register for men's league once men's league registration opens if they didn't make it into their preferred league. 

The updated lottery sign-up for males will be very similar to registration in past years, but the key difference will be that males participating in the lottery will do two tasks beyond filling out the standard skills/availability questions--select which league(s) the participant is interested to play in with a stack ranking preference order, plus the opportunity to register for multiple leagues if capacity warrants it.  While it may seem like this lottery sign-up being separate from league registration is more work, it actually streamlines the process since you will only need to fill out a single form to complete a lottery sign-up for all of the co-ed leagues.  In years past you had to do a separate form for each league.  In addition the single page stack-ranking system should be more straightforward than the old registration statuses (primary, secondary, backup, overflow).

For women interested in participating in any co-ed leagues, we do not plan to host a lottery. League registration will open on March 20th for all co-ed leagues and men's leagues. Women are encouraged to sign-up early for the co-ed league(s) they are interested in - invite your friends, family and teammates! If there are not enough female registrations as years past, we may have to shrink leagues, so women, please sign up as soon as you know what leagues you can commit to after March 20. Additionally, if there is any remaining space for males in any of the co-ed leagues, those spots will also be available once league registration opens. As we've seen in years past, however, the likelihood of open male slots in co-ed leagues after the lottery ends is quite slim, so men interested in the co-ed leagues are urged to participate in the lottery process March 15 - 18th. For men interested in only playing men's league, this lottery process doesn't apply - sign up during league registration that opens on March 20th.
