About the 2017 League

  • The TCUL Summer Recreational League stresses sociability, learning, and skill development, while providing the opportunity for competitive, organized ultimate. You can expect more focus on winning than most pickup games, but should also feel comfortable asking to play a role that's new to you. TCUL Summer Rec league welcomes both novice and expert players who are looking forward to playing and learning from teammates via an organized draft/hat format. TCUL summer league lets you join as an individual, rather than a whole team. A draft is held each year for captains to form teams. Rankings provided by the players during registration are used to balance the teams. The league is also co-ed, with a 4:3 male:female format.
  • There are no games July 4.
  • The Blaine fields are unavailable July 18. As in years past, we will attempt to secure alternate fields.

Registration

Register and pay for the league online. Registration begins March 15. Payment will take place through Paypal but you do not need to have a Paypal account in order to pay by credit card. We strongly encourage everyone to ensure that they can  login prior to the registration period.

Ranking System

Players should assign themselves a skill ranking from 1 (low) to 6 (high) in each of the following areas: Remember, these are ranks relative to your teammates and competitors.

  • Athleticism Speed, quickness, endurance and jumping ability all combine to form your Athleticism rank.
  • Throws How sharp your throws, and to a lesser extent, how far they go.
  • Field Skills How well do you understand the game - offense and defense, and transition.

Fields

All games will be at the National Sports Center in Blaine, except during their blackout weeks; during these weeks we will play at alternative locations.

Remember, NO ALCOHOL is allowed on the fields, either at the National Sport Center or any alternative locations. This means no alcoholic beverages whatsoever at after game cookouts. If we lose our fields, the league is over.

Games

Games start at 6:45 p.m. You’re encouraged to show up early (usually around 6:15) to find the right field, change, warm up, do a few drills, and prepare for the game.

Games are played to 15. There will be no time cap, but the captains may agree to call the game on account of darkness.

Rules

We are playing under the USAU 11th Edition Rules. You can get a copy from the USAU website http://www.usaultimate.org/resources/officiating/rules/11th_edition_rules.aspx

There are a few exceptions we would like to highlight:

  • Due to the short fields at Blaine, brick is 15 yards
  • Players will be able to call equipment timeouts
  • Zone is not allowed in weeks 1-6. Poaching is allowed. After that, zone is allowed for the remainder of the regular season as long as both captains agree prior to the start of the game.  Zone is allowed without opposing captains approval in the playoffs.

Players

In the Co-ed league, each team must have three men and three women on the field at all times. If both teams have at least one sub for each gender, games can be played 4F/3M (offense gets to choose whether 3 or 4 women will be on the line for the pull) if both captains agree before the start of the game, or else the standard 4M/3F ratio will be used.

Walk-on players (such as visitors or friends) are allowed, with the following limitations:

  • Walk on players must sign a waiver before playing.
  • You must let your team and the opposing team's captain(s) know and you must get the approval of the TCUL Tuesday Coordinators.
  • A walk on player must be a reasonably fair "1 for 1" replacement for a missing player on the roster. Captains work hard with TCUL to balance team strength at the draft, and walk-ons should preserve that balance, not disrupt it.
  • A walk-on player may only play in a maximum of two games during the season
  • Walk-on players are only allowed in order to bring a team to a maximum of 6 men and 5 women. If the team already has 6+ men or 5+ women, then walk-on players are not allowed.
  • During playoffs the maximum limits are reduced to 5 men and 4 women. No walk-on players are allowed if the team already has 5+ men or 4+ women.

In addition to the above, the following limitations also apply during playoffs:

  • Walk-on players must be approved by the TCUL board in advance of the game. Email tcul@mnultimate.org, your team, and the opposing captain in advance with the names of the walk-on player and the missing player the walk-on is replacing. Remember: a walk-on must be a fair "1 for 1" replacement; one walk-on must fairly replace only one missing player.

Please remember that registered players have paid for the opportunity to play. Having walk-on players reduces playing time for registered players and is not fair to them.

Player Safety

A reminder to all TCUL players regarding player safety. Dangerous play of any type is not tolerated by TCUL and repeated or egregious violations may result in removal from games or a ban from TCUL leagues. The 11th Edition Rules defines dangerous play as: "Reckless disregard for the safety of fellow players or other dangerously aggressive behavior (such as significantly colliding into a stationary opponent), regardless of whether or when the disc arrives or when contact occurs is considered dangerous play and is treated as a foul. If no contact occurs, there is no callable dangerous play. Contact need not be severe. The proper call in this case is "Dangerous Play." The caller should then briefly explain the grounds for the call. This call trumps any foul rules and should be used in situations where the play presented serious risk of injury."

First Aid

A first aid kit is provided for each team. Your team’s captain should have it with him/her at every game or leave with a designated member of the team if he/she cannot attend a given week’s game.

Rain and lightning

In case of inclement weather, a decision will be made by 6:00 pm about whether or not to cancel the games. If severe weather is imminent, games will be canceled and an announcement placed on the TCUL website, on the TCUL facebook page, and on the TCUL Twitter feed. Games may also be canceled at game time or during the game if there is lightning anywhere in the area. If your game is canceled, please do not play.
